Lithium ion can refer to a variety of chemical substances, but it ultimately consists of batteries based on the charge and discharge reaction of lithiated metal oxide cathodes and graphite anodes. Two more commonly used lithium ion chemistries are considered here—nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP). High-performance NMC battery materials are designed to meet the quality, reliability, efficiency, and safety requirements of next-generation lithium-ion battery manufacturers.
