On March 17, 2025, CATL and NIO entered into a strategic partnership in Ningde, Fujian. Their goal is to build the world's largest battery swapping network and promote industry-wide technology standardization, advancing the electric vehicle (EV) sector into a new phase of high-quality development.
The partnership will focus on creating the most extensive and advanced battery swapping service network for passenger vehicles. By combining their expertise in technology, management, platforms, and branding, the two companies aim to drive the adoption of battery swapping services. They will align on battery standards, enhancing the sharing of their networks and speeding up the rollout of swapping stations. CATL will assist NIO in developing the infrastructure, while NIO's new brand, Firefly, will adopt CATL's Choco-Swap technology for future models. The combined networks will work together, offering EV owners a more convenient and efficient swapping experience.
Looking ahead, both companies will work on developing national battery swapping standards in China, improving compatibility across different vehicle brands and models. Their collaboration will also cover the entire lifecycle of batteries—from research and development to swapping services, asset management, recycling, and reuse—helping to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enhance safety across the new energy vehicle industry.
